Welcome to Corona Box City, inspired and designed by the architects of tomorrow! 🌆
On June 5, 2019 Corona Public Library staff members, Madelyne Palafox and Jennifer Bauserman held an orientation for “Corona Box City.” Over the course of seven weeks, children (ages 6-12) were instructed by guest architect, Baxter Miller from BMLA Landscape Architecture to teach as how to best utilize a plot of land to create a scale model cardboard city at the library. The seventy-five children who enrolled in the program decided which buildings they would construct and were issued educational building permits from City of Corona Officials, Corona Fire Department Fire Marshall Cindi Schmitz, Deputy Building Official Oscar Davalos, Chief Building Official Chris Milosevic and Building permit technician Megan Lathrop.
The participants were invited in twice a week to work with cardboard and create their assigned building. Children were provided supplies such as cardboard, child safe cutting tools, measuring tools, paint, and construction paper to occupy their plot of land that measured 20 by 20 inches.
Today, the children participated in a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony where they received a free copy of the graphic novel Cardboard Kingdom, courtesy of the Friends of the Corona Public Library. They were also awarded an educational certificate of building occupancy from Corona’s Building Officials.
